A Year of Gratitude – May 8, 2024

I found my gratitude in raindrops today. It was a rainy day from start to finish. There was barely a spot of time when it wasn’t raining today.

We’ve had far too much rain this spring. We’ve seen ponding in places we’ve never had issues. I’ve battled water in the basement of the old farmhouse. It’s been a messy spring so far.

Today, I was grateful that the basement wasn’t filled with water. If you’ve ever had to deal with a flooded basement, you know what a relief it is to check the basement and find that it is damp but not flooded. I felt that feeling and was thankful for it.

I’d like to see a bit less rain in the coming week, but the forecast doesn’t look promising. I’ll have to hope for sunshine between the rainstorms. Of course, it does provide me with the opportunity to take photos of spring flowers and raindrops. If you’ve been following here for a bit, you know how much I love that.

So, I grabbed my camera today and headed outside in my rain jacket. The very first tulip had chosen today to open up. I stood over it and captured a few photos before it started raining so heavily that the tulip was moving too much to photograph.

Yes, I got wet, but I didn’t mind. When I walked back to the mudroom door, Penny Lane was standing inside watching me. Her tail was wagging as I walked towards her. I came inside, took off my soggy jacket, and patted her on the head.

I made myself a cup of tea and we settled in on the couch together for a bit. She napped and I edited photos while sipping my tea. The rain was falling steadily outside. The farmhouse was quiet, so it tapped out a rhythm on the chimney cap connected to the stone hearth. It rises three stories above, but I could still hear the rain drops as they made contact with it.

It wasn’t long before Penny’s snoring melted in with the sound of the raindrops. It was such a soothing combination of sounds on a rainy afternoon, and another reason for me to be grateful.
