A Year of Gratitude – January 28, 2024
Can you find gratitude in a crumpet?
I woke up early and decided to make something for Sunday breakfast. Penny Lane was napping on the couch and the house was quiet. I rifled through my recipes and decided on one for sourdough crumpets.
When the crumpet dough started to warm up on the cast iron griddle, the farmhouse kitchen began to smell of fresh baked sourdough bread. The smell alone gave me a reason to feel grateful.
Once the batch was finished and cooling on a wire rack, I slathered butter on one while it was still warm. I followed the butter with a generous heap of homemade marmalade. It was time to pour the coffee and take the first bite.
Penny always seems to know when I am about to eat something. She came padding into the kitchen to sit at my feet and remind me that she was a willing taste tester.
I stood at the kitchen window, lifted the crumpet to my lips, and took the first warm bite. The airy pockets in the crumpet were full of melted butter and marmalade just as they should be. I closed my eyes and turned my face towards the sunshine streaming in the window. I enjoyed every bit of that crumpet other than the edge that I happily shared with Penny Lane.
I was content and grateful in that moment, standing in the sunshine, the flavor of marmalade fresh on my tongue. It’s the quiet moments like these that fill me with gratitude these days. I feel lucky to live them and even more fortunate to notice them, to know that they are wondrous and beautiful.
Yes, you can find gratitude in a crumpet especially if it is dripping with warm marmalade. I did this morning.
I hope that you find gratitude today and that your day treats you gently.
