Make Your Own Homemade Fajita Seasoning Mix

Make Your Own Homemade Fajita Seasoning Mix

When you make your own homemade fajita seasoning mix, you can adjust the ingredients to suit your family’s dietary needs and preferences. The result is a mix you can keep in your pantry to make a delicious meal.

Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo, the perfect reason to make a meal for our dinner table that combines the bright, fresh Mexican flavors that we all love.  While I could certainly reach for a packet of prepared seasoning mix, I much prefer blending a homemade fajita seasoning mix that includes spices we like and can be blended to be milder or spicier depending on what we’re serving and who will be gathered at our dinner table.

Because we eat around food allergies, I like preparing our own seasoning blends.  When you make your own homemade fajita seasoning mix, you can adjust the ingredients. I can easily avoid ingredients that aren’t safe for my family and spices that aren’t well-received at our dinner table.  I can also limit the amount of sodium in our blends and create a flavor that is exactly what we love.

The beauty of this seasoning blend is that you can adjust the ingredients to your liking.  Add more cayenne if you like your blend spicy, omit the brown sugar and cinnamon if you prefer, or add in a teaspoon of cumin if you love the smoky flavor it adds.  No matter the blend, you’ll find that your fajitas will taste delicious and you’ll have your own fresh spice blend at the ready to make the next batch.  You’ll also find that this seasoning blend is yummy sprinkled over eggs, or used to season side dishes like fresh guacamole or the Farmhouse Coleslaw we like to serve with our fajitas and tacos.

I can’t wait to hear how you change this seasoning mix for your family!

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  • Mix all ingredients together. I often mix up a double or triple batch and keep it in a Mason jar with a tight fitting lid.
  • To use as fajita seasoning, cook the meat and vegetables for your filling before adding a tablespoon or two of the seasoning to the pan and stirring to coat. Add between ¼ and ½ cup of water or bone broth and bring to a simmer. The liquid will thicken once it begins to simmer and coat the meat and vegetables in a delicious, flavorful sauce. You can add a squeeze of fresh lime and chopped cilantro before serving if desired.
