A Year of Gratitude – October 10, 2024

I made my gratitude with my own two hands today. It’s not often that I make the time to create something just for the sake of making it. Today, I did and it felt so wonderful to do so.

This might not look like much of a reason to be grateful. It’s such a small bit of something. It’s not the completion of a grand project. In fact, it’s just the beginning of one.

If you’re a crafter, you know the feeling of picking up a craft you’ve set down for longer than you intended to. All summer, I hoped to get back to my knitting needles. I just never got there.

There was always something that needed doing in the garden, in the yard, or for our shop. That didn’t leave time for making something just for the joy of making it.

Today, I found just a few minutes to look through the stash of yarn my daughter and I keep. I found a fuzzy skein in this pretty color and decided to grab my knitting needles and work up a gauge swatch for a pattern I’ve been working on.

It only took a few minutes, but in that time, I could feel the worries of the day falling away. I could feel my breath become more metered and my shoulders relax. I could feel the joy coming back into my hands with each stitch.

By the time the swatch was finished, it was time to move back to my to do list. It was also time to promise myself to get back to my knitting needles, to make time for making things just for the love of making them. Now it’s time to make sure that I keep that promise.
