A Year of Gratitude – June 23, 2024
I found my gratitude in the same place this morning and evening. My day was busy from start to finish, but it began and ended with a few stolen moments spent on the couch with Penny Lane.
Those moments are always dear to me, but today they were the moments that bookended my day. We began the day with a few moments together on the couch in the old parlor room. It was raining outside, so there were no squirrels for her to closely monitor. There weren’t any joggers passing by that needed to be reminded that she didn’t want them to come any closer to her house.
There was just rain falling outside the window. So, we sat on the couch together for a bit and just listened to the rain. Well, I listened to the rain and the sound of her snoring while she took a post breakfast nap. It was such a calm and peaceful way to begin the day.
Then the day became busy and before I knew it, evening had arrived. Penny Lane moved to the couch in the family room for her long evening nap. I was working on a recipe at my desk nearby. It was after 10:00 pm when I pushed back from the desk to call it a day. She raised her head, looked at me, and seemed to be asking me to come join her on the couch.
So, I did. She let out a deep sigh and put her head on the pillow. In moments, she was breathing softly and fast asleep. The rain had started up again, falling rather loudly outside. I closed my eyes for a few minutes and listened, just enjoying the calm at the end of a busy day. It was as peaceful an end to a day as it had been a beginning and I have Penny Lane to thank for both of them.
