A Year of Gratitude – May 16, 2024
I found my gratitude in the promise of ripe, red strawberries this morning. It rained early, so there were still raindrops clinging to bright green leaves and flower petals when I headed outside to do my morning chores. I love seeing those heavy drops of water before they have had a chance to fall to the ground or vanished by the warmth of the sun.
So, I finished my chores and decided to take a walk through the gardens. I started with the perennials in the flower beds. There were buds beginning to appear and bright green leaves and shoots giving those precious raindrops a place to rest.
The rhubarb has grown tremendously in the last few weeks, forming enormous leaves that have unfurled to create shade for the stalks below. The adjacent raspberry patch is starting to come into its own with green leaves and tiny flower buds that are just beginning to be visible.
As I headed back towards the farmhouse, I walked between the raised beds and found myself smiling at the collection of strawberry plants with their bright white and yellow flowers below.
There’s something unique about strawberry blossoms to my eye. They’re so round and look like something come to life from a child’s drawing of a flower. They’re such a sign of delicious things to come.
I have great hope for the growing season ahead. I hope that it will be a season of delicious, fresh produce to nourish us. I hope that it will be the season of growth after a season of rest. I hope that these happy little blossoms will be transformed into red, juicy strawberries for me to create something delicious for our family table.
Do you grow strawberries in your garden? I’d love to hear your strawberry growing tips and tricks so that I can help to make our harvest the best one yet.
