A Year of Gratitude – October 6, 2024

My reason for gratitude is snoring on the couch next to me this evening. Sure, I am grateful for Penny Lane’s company every day. Today, I was especially thankful for her.

I had big plans when the day began. They all came to a screeching halt when I woke up feeling a bit under the weather.

Chores still needed to be done, so I did them. The hens were happy to see me and the weather was crisp and a bit bracing. I hoped that a bit of the brisk fall air and a little movement outside might help.

When it didn’t, I hoped that a cup of tea and a piece of sourdough toast might do the trick. As soon as I sat down to enjoy them, Penny Lane appeared. She loves a piece of toast and she knows that I’ll always share the last bite with her.

After she ate her toast, she nudged me with her nose. Then she placed her head on my leg. I like to think that she knew I wasn’t feeling well and wanted to comfort me.

It was still early, so I decided to do something rare for me. I walked with Penny Lane to her favorite spot on the couch. I got under a blanket, covered Penny with her favorite blanket, and we took a nap.

When I woke up, Penny was still right at my side. I felt a little better, but it was definitely not going to be the busy and productive day I had planned for.

I don’t remember the last time I allowed myself the pleasure of taking a short nap.  It’s been so long that I don’t remember. What a shame that is. A nap is a luxury that doesn’t cost anything.

Tonight, I’m settled in on that same couch with Penny Lane and a cup of tea. I’m hoping that a good night’s sleep will be just what the doctor ordered. In the meantime, it’s such a comfort to know that Penny Lane is by my side. Her company is the very best medicine for me.
