A Year of Gratitude – October 5, 2024

I have our hens to thank for my gratitude today. They surprised me with four fresh eggs this afternoon. We have nine hens, so it isn’t uncommon to find that many fresh eggs in the nest box during the spring and summer.

But it isn’t summer. It’s long past the time of year when the hens slow down. Their bodies are preparing for the winter ahead. They begin molting and as the feathers begin to accumulate in the coop, the eggs become few and far between.

So, discovering four beautiful fresh eggs waiting for me on a single fall day is a real gift. I did as I always do and thanked the girls aloud. It might seem silly, but it seems only right to thank them for the fresh eggs that will nourish my family.

As I walked back to the mud room door, I could hear the chickens making their happy hen sounds. The sun was shining, the hens were happy, and so was I.

  • I thank the girls, too, and how much we appreciate them. Just the thing we do, trying not to take anything for granted. We are blessed, aren’t we!
