A Year of Gratitude – September 1, 2024

I gathered my gratitude in the garden today. By the time I was finished, I had a large bowl of ripe tomatoes and a handful of tiny schwatzenberries to add to my collection in the freezer in the hopes that I’ll soon have enough for a pie.

There’s something about the arrival of September that makes the garden’s harvest seem even more magical. We’ve arrived at the point when summer will turn to fall and yet the garden is still producing delicious food for our family table.

No matter how many years I tend to a garden, I am still amazed that tiny seeds started in early spring can become plants with the energy to produce fruits and vegetables for us to enjoy. You might think that with each passing year that magic would dwindle. But it hasn’t for me. I feel the same joy upon discovering a ripe tomato now that I did the very first year I grew them in this garden.

I hope that I always will. There’s something about that magic that feeds my soul as much as my body. It reminds me that wondrous things are happening all around us. There’s magic in the ordinary things we see every day. The real magic is in not taking them for granted and seeing that magic for the wondrous gift that it is.
