A Year of Gratitude – July 10, 2024
As a gardener, it’s easy to find gratitude in the daily harvest, even when that harvest is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. The tomato harvest fit there with room to spare today and I was still filled with gratitude for these little morsels.
Each one of them is a miracle. That’s how I feel about something we grow in our garden. While I understand that a seed is planted, nurtured, tended, and transplanted into our garden, It’s a miracle all the same.
Once it moves into the garden, it’s astounding that it can continue to grow and produce fruit. The fact that any of that ripe fruit makes it to harvest day, avoids garden pests, endures uneven weather, all to create a bite of food for our family table is a miracle in my eyes.
So, yes, I will be filled with gratitude, humbled by even these small tomatoes. It’s astonishing that they exist at all. I feel lucky to have played a small part in their coming into being. I will celebrate each bite and be mindful of how much work it takes to create every bite of food that lands on our table.
