A Year of Gratitude – May 28, 2024

I found gratitude in a peony today. I look forward to these showy blooms every year. Each one of them reminds me of time spent in my grandmother’s tiny garden when I was a little girl.

I have such vivid memories of walking barefoot in the grass near her garden. When the peonies were heavy with blooms, I would plunge my nose deep into the pale pink flowers to breathe in their scent. I was too young to know that I should look for ants first. I just knew that I wanted to fill my nose with that delightful scent.

That was nearly fifty years ago, but the sight of a peony bloom has the power to transport me right back, to that moment. These buds will open soon and bring forth this year’s parade of fragrant peony blooms. I can’t wait to plunge my nose deep inside to fill my nose with their intoxicating scent. I’ll be sure to look for ants first, but they won’t keep me from smelling that scent I wait all year long for.

Do you have peonies in your garden?
