A Year of Gratitude – May 24, 2024

I found my gratitude in the garden’s promise of something beautiful to come today. This lupine that my mom planted last year has flourished this spring. We can’t wait to see its brightly colored blooms.

Last year, we reworked this spot. It is adjacent to the path around the chicken coop. It gets strong sunshine most of the day and a bit of protection from the wind thanks to the chicken coop and barn.

We added a few raised beds for herbs and vegetables. It’s a kitchen garden of sorts. Whatever it is producing is what I’m most likely preparing for our dinner table.

My mom grew lupine from seed last spring. When we finished this space, she added a few of them. They were tiny and we did our best to care for them last year. We hoped that they would live to see this growing season.

They have astounded us with their growth. The leaves are big and bright green, glossy, and healthy. The plant has started to set the poker shaped buds that will eventually bloom into dark purple flowers.

We’ve never had lupine blooming in the garden, so the promise of them showing off for us this summer is a real treat. I just can’t wait to see those dark purple blooms.

Do you grow lupine in your garden?
