A Year of Gratitude – May 23, 2024

I found my gratitude in a flower bed this morning. Yesterday’s hot weather and today’s continued warmth had me watering our newly planted perennials and annuals. As I turned off the water, I noticed that our poppies have produced more buds than ever before.

I walked over to get a closer look and was stunned at how many buds were on each of our poppy plants. We’ve had these plants for several years and I have never seen them so loaded with their fuzzy little round buds.

Poppies are such an interesting looking plant. The leaves are bright and ominous looking with their spiny texture. The buds are so closely held, so tight that you can’t even see a peek of the beautiful poppy petals held inside. Even the buds are covered with tiny little hairs that seem to forever be standing at attention.

It won’t be long until this bud opens and releases the papery thin, delicate petals inside. The blooms are so showy and striking. They stand on leggy stems that dance in the wind.

I can’t wait for them to bloom so that I can share them with you.
