A Year of Gratitude – April 6, 2024
My gratitude today was of the easiest sort of gratitude. It’s not difficult to feel grateful for the gift of homemade cookies.
When my mom told me that she had baked a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies before our snowstorm earlier this week, I felt like a kid again. There’s something about that feeling when your parents do something for you, when they remind you that you might not be a kid any longer, but that you’re still their child, that you never outgrow the sort of love they have for you. I sure hope that you have known that feeling.
She wanted us to have something homemade and comforting here at the farmhouse to reward us for the hours of shoveling and snow throwing that she knew we would have ahead of us. So, she baked up loaves of banana bread and a batch of chocolate chip cookies. Everyone was so happy that she did.
After the shoveling, we were even more grateful to have homemade cookies in the cookie jar. Our arms were tired, and we were cold, but having her cookies as a reward made such a difference. There’s something about a mother or grandmother’s love that warms you up from the inside out.
That was a few days ago, but I found myself in need of a bit of comfort again today and I knew right where to go: the cookie jar. I helped myself to a cookie and each delicious bite helped remind me that she is always in my corner, always ready to help, and always rooting for me. It was just what I needed.
A chocolate chip cookie and a loving mom are about the most delightful reasons I can think of to be grateful. She’s taught me so much over the years, including the lesson that a homemade cookie is a great way to comfort the people you love.
And yes, she was outside in the snow helping to clear it away. She’s also taught me about working hard and pitching in so that many hands can make the work lighter. They’re good lessons, especially if you can learn them and reward yourself with a homemade cookie.
