A Year of Gratitude – March 7, 2024

I found my gratitude in daydreaming while working today. I was taking photos of spring fabrics and using these knitted carrots I made several years ago. The scene was full of happy colors and bright promise of spring. They made me smile just to look upon them.

As I worked with them, I couldn’t help but keep smiling. I started daydreaming of warm sunny days spent in the garden, planting what will hopefully create a lush edible palette of homegrown produce for our family table.

It was a rainy, dreary day here, so the simple ability to daydream about spring, about warmth, and about the feeling of moving warm garden soil aside to plant this year’s crops was such a gift. While the fabric didn’t give that gift to me, seeing it allowed me to give it to myself.

It’s funny how something so small can give you the ability to do something you might not grant yourself permission to do. It would be so much easier if we simply allowed ourselves to daydream as we did when we were children.

Sure, I understand that there are things to do, tasks to accomplish. Those tasks don’t allow for hours of daydreaming. But we could take a moment. We could take a few deep breaths and think about something that fills our heart with joy. We could be so much better at completing the tasks in front of us if we didn’t see them as keeping us from something we love.

I don’t always do a good job of that, but I’m going to try to do better. I’m going to try to see the tasks between me and the things I long to do as steps between here and there. That’s really what they are. And while I do that, I will take a deep breath and daydream about the garden and other things that I love to do. I hope that you will too.
