Breakfast Smoothie

Breakfast Smoothie

There are few things I enjoy more than spending time in our Farmhouse Kitchen cooking and baking for my family.  When Lifeway Foods invited me to participate in their kefir recipe challenge, I couldn’t wait to get started.

We’ve been using Lifeway Foods kefir for years here at the farmhouse.  We love its flavor along with the healthy boost of nutrition it adds to overnight oats, smoothies, and baking recipes.  I keep it on hand and often substitute it for buttermilk when I make pancakes, waffles, or quick breads.

Families like mine who live with nut allergies can enjoy Lifeway’s drinkable kefir products safely.  They are produced in a 100% peanut and tree nut free facility.   I like to support companies that make products that are safe for us to have here in our nut free home, so I always reach for Lifeway at our local grocery store. It’s a staple in our refrigerator.

My son is a fan of smoothies and we have created a few delicious and healthy blends that he makes on a regular basis.  This recipe challenge seemed like the perfect reason to work on a new smoothie recipe together. We spent a few weeks testing out different combinations of fruit, milk kefir, and other smoothie additions.

One afternoon, my son remarked that we hadn’t made one of our homemade Orange Julius shakes in a long time. I agreed and the mere thought of that frosty treat made me wonder if we should try to make a breakfast smoothie using milk kefir, orange juice, and bananas.

We started working with that combination and kept tinkering until we had finally developed a simple recipe that delivered a delicious blend of flavors in a frothy texture that we both loved.  My son decided that we should add in oats to thicken the smoothie and add a bit of flavor.  We purposely chose not to add any specialty smoothie ingredients that might be difficult to find. We also limited the ingredients so that this smoothie would be a breeze to pull together first thing in the morning.

We’ve been making this smoothie a lot lately. It’s a delicious way to begin our day here in the farmhouse. Of course, it’s also a scrumptious afternoon treat and perfect for enjoying any time of day.

Orange Banana Smoothie

Jennifer from 1840 Farm
We used a frozen orange juice concentrate that was 100% juice to deliver the bold orange flavor we wanted. We used plain milk kefir in our recipe, but you could easily substitute a vanilla flavored kefir if you have it on hand. If you like a smoothie with a frosty texture, a frozen sliced banana can be used.
