Easy Instant Pot Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Easy Instant Pot Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Making mashed sweet potatoes isn’t difficult, but it’s even easier to make Instant Pot mashed sweet potatoes. Let your Instant Pot do all the work and move straight to enjoying the yummy mashed sweet potatoes on your dinner plate.

Sweet potatoes are among my favorite fall flavors.  Once the summer eases towards fall, I keep sweet potatoes at the ready in the pantry.   They’re so versatile, packed with nutrition, and everyone at the farmhouse loves them.

As a child, I only saw sweet potatoes once a year. They made an appearance on our Thanksgiving table. I loved them, but they were rarely seen outside of that holiday meal each November. And yes, they were often covered with a mile-high topping of marshmallows.

As an adult, I like my sweet potatoes to taste like, well, sweet potatoes. I don’t want them to be covered up with other flavors. Instead, I want to celebrate them for what they are: delicious. Of course, I do often add a sprinkling of blue cheese on top.  That’s a combination of flavors I discovered a few years ago. It’s so delicious.

During the fall and winter, we often add sweet potatoes to our plates. I would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite between Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Brown Butter and Sage and Sweet Potatoes Anna. They have both been staples in my recipe collection for years.

Of course, if you enjoy the flavor of sweet potatoes, one of the easiest ways to prepare them is to mash them.  If you’re looking to simplify them even further, your Instant Pot can make the purest form of mashed sweet potato in minutes.

I often turn to my Instant Pot to make mashed sweet potatoes, traditional mashed potatoes, or even neeps and tatties.  Doing so frees up a burner on the stovetop and lets me cook the potatoes in the background while I am focusing on the other components for dinner. It also lets me pull off a magic trick: I can make fluffy, delicious mashed sweet potatoes that are full of flavor without adding an obscene amount of butter and cream.

I like to cook the sweet potatoes in homemade bone broth and simply add a generous pat of butter to the pot when I mash them at the end of their cooking cycle.  They are light, fluffy, and simply delicious.

Best of all, this recipe is so easy that I can make it on a busy evening when I am in a rush to put dinner on the table. Quick, simple, healthy, and delicious: you just can’t beat that combination especially when everyone is happy to see a favorite dish on their dinner plates!

Author: Jennifer from 1840 Farm

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes peeled and cut into 1” cubes
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup bone broth or stock
  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Place the sweet potatoes, salt, and bone broth in the bowl of the Instant Pot. Turn the valve to “sealing” and secure the lid. Select the manual setting and cook at high pressure for 8 minutes.
  • When the cooking time has elapsed, allow the pressure to naturally dissipate for approximately 15 minutes. Flip the vent to “venting” to release any remaining pressure and take care to avoid the steam.
  • Add the butter and mash the sweet potatoes with a spoon or potato masher until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add a bit of bone broth or stock if needed to achieve the desired consistency. Serve and enjoy!

  • I haven’t tried it yet, but I love sweet potatoes and we just got an Instant Pot so I can’t wait to try this recipe.

A friend of mine recommended I check out your web site. This is my first visit and I am very impressed.

To put this in perspective I am a guy that will be 69 in less than a month, and my buddy that recommended you is almost as old. We have both been married for over 40 years, and while our wives cook, they are perfectly happy to watch us, especially if we clean up afterward.

    • I am grateful to your friend for the kind introduction. Welcome! I hope that you will give this recipe a try. You can also make delicious traditional mashed potatoes by substituting your favorite waxy potatoes for the sweet potatoes. They’re equally delicious.

I am so glad that you dropped by. I can’t wait to hear what you think of this recipe. I hope that you’ll enjoy it and come back to find another recipe you’d like to try!

      • You can absolutely make them on the stove top. They can be prepared just like traditional mashed potatoes. Boil the cubes in salted water until tender. Drain them and then add enough liquid to mash them and achieve the texture you like. You can use any combination of stock, milk, and cream. Season to taste and enjoy!
