Gardening For Chickens

Fall Garden Beds at 1840 FarmI have read a lot of great posts about gardening with free ranging chickens.  Our chickens don’t roam our gardens as free ranging isn’t an option for our farm.  We live too close to a busy state highway and a neighborhood that would prefer that our hens stay within the confines of our property.  That doesn’t mean that we don’t garden with our chickens in mind.

In fact, we share a lot of our garden produce with our flock.  We even grow crops specifically for the purpose of treating them to fresh greens.  Now you can do the same with a package of Chicken Salad Seed Mix from My Pet Chicken.  You can earn up to four entries below.  One winner will be randomly selected and notified by Email.  Good luck to all who enter!

Great article. My chickens have also loved the fresh produce from my small garden. I’m the one bemoaning the loss of summer daylight and heat and the fact that I can’t give them a fresh snack every day. They run to the door when they see me coming and I feel guilty not having something to give them, besides their daily ration of grain or layer crumbles. Guess the next fresh thing they will get will be the henbit that pops up across the yard in the spring….

I have a few open pkgs of different types of lettuce that I can still plant as I live in Florida. Thanks for the great idea!

Thanks for the idea! I have a few greens left under the leaves, and a good spot to plant a few for spring.

I love all the sites about raising chickens, and farm life. I was raised in the country and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Thank you for the GREAT article Jennifer !!! My hens also enjoyed the fresh goodies from our summer garden and now I give them scrambled eggs for protein, leftover pasta, raisins, breads, apples, and they absolutely LOVE uncooked oats…I’ll definitely have to try cooking them up a batch of warm oatmeal with some raisins !!! Sounds like just the thing for these chilly mornings !!! Thanks for the GREAT giveaway !!!

We cannot free range our chickens either. It amazed me how many of my neighbors I discovered had bird dogs after we got chickens!!! We even lost one to a bird dog. 🙁 Love the idea of growing greens for my girl!

My chickens love produce, and it is so bountiful in the summer! Right now, all they get is leftover table scraps=(. I know they miss it.

I think this is great. We move soon and I will get to have chickens and a garden to feed the WHOLE family. Keep us informed as to how long you are able to harvest from the raised bed.
